Madopar notes:
Madopar is indicated for the oral treatment of all forms of the Parkinson disease, with the exception of drug induced parkinsoism. It is also used to treat idiopathic and symptomatic restless legs syndrome. Levodopa is reported as an ingredient of Madopar.
It is used in the management of Parkinson's disease in combination with L-DOPA (levodopa) as co-beneldopa (BAN) and available under the brand name of Madopar in UK and Prolopa in Canada, both manufactured by Roche.
Benserazide is a peripherally-acting aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (AAAD) or DOPA decarboxylase inhibitor which is unable to cross the blood-brain barrier. Benserazide is not approved for use in the US, carbidopa is used instead for the same purpose.
Madopar side effects includes drowsiness, sweating, blood disorders, red colouration of urine, loss of appetite, bleeding from stomach or intestine, anxiety and agitation, abnormal heart beats, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea.
Madopar HBS is a controlled-release preparation and is not as popular with people with Parkinson's because the onset of clinical improvement is slower than with standard levodopa preparations. It contains 100mg levodopa and 25 mg beserazide. Madopar is available in 62.5mg, 125mg, 250mg of tablets.
The initial Madopar dose should be one capsule or dispersible tablet of 50 mg/12.5 mg three or four times daily. Madopar medication should be swallowed whole and not broken, chewed or crushed.
