Arthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints, characterized by swelling, warmth, redness of the overlying skin, pain and restriction of motion. It can be caused by any disease involving the synovial membranes or causing degeneration of cartilage. Aspirin and analgesics are usually prescribed to suppress inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis is a form of arthritis which typically involves the joints of the fingers, wrists, feet and ankles. The joints are affected symmetrically and there is a considerable range of severity. In late stages deformity and ankylosis develop.

Arava
TextArava (Generic Name: Leflunomide) is an oral, disease-modifying drug which is used for treating rheumatoid arthritis. Leflunomide reduces joint-inflammation which leads to destruction of joints and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. It reduces inflammation through the suppression of the activity of immune cells that are responsible for the inflammation. Leflunomide also represses immune cells by inhibiting dihydroorotate dehydrogenase, an enzyme essential to produce DNA and RNA. Immune cells and most other type of cells cannot multiply, function, or exist without DNA and RNA. Due to its one of a kind mechanism of action, Leflunomide is valuable when added to other medications used for treating rheumatoid arthritis. Severe side effects may include liver damage, hepatitis, and jaundice. Continue reading...

Anti-inflammatory

Inflammation is defined as a normal protective response of the body to injury caused by physical trauma or impact, chemicals or microbiological agents. Inflammation is an essential body response for survival – without it, simple or mild environmental pathogens couldeasily kill us!

There are four classic inflammatory responses, regardless of cause – warmth, pain, redness, and swelling.

Inflammation is initiated by inflammatory cells found all over the body like macrophages, dendritic cells, histiocytes, Kupffer cells. These cells release inflammatory mediators such as histamine, IFN ã, IL 8, leukotriene B4, nitric oxide, prostaglandins, TNFá and IL-1. Plasma derived mediators are also involved, like bradykinin, C3, C5a, plasmin and thrombin.

It is typically used for its anti-inflammatory effects, like most adrenocortical steroids, but it can change the metabolism and the immune responses. The list of medical conditions for which methlyprednisolone is prescribed is rather long, and is similar to other corticosteroids such as prednisolone. Common uses include arthritis therapy and short-term treatment of bronchial inflammation or acute bronchitis due to various respiratory diseases. It is used both in the treatment of acute periods and long-term management of autoimmune diseases, most notably Systemic lupus erythematosus.

Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen, initially launched as Brufen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is now widely opened into the market under various trademarks, Nurofen, Advil and Mortin. Now invalid nomenclature, Ibuprofen was an iso-butyl-propanoic-phenolic acid. It is applied as an aid for arthritis, primary dysmenorrhoea and common fever. With the presence of an inflammatory element, this drug also acts as a painkiller. Ibuprofen also has proven to have an antiplatelet effect. But when contrasted with that of aspirin and other popular antiplatelet medicines, it is comparatively mild and short-termed. Measured as one of the core drugs in the "Essential Drugs List" of the World Health Organization, Ibuprofen plays a vital part of the minimum medical needs for a basic health care system.
