Arimidex
breast cancerArimidex (Generic Name: Anastrozole) is a medication used for the treatment of breast cancer post-surgery and metastases in women who are post-menopausal. This drug inhibits the enzyme aromatase which works by converting androgens into estrogens in the peripheral tissues. Via competitive inhibition, the drug reversibly binds to aromatase. Through this mechanism, Anastrozole works by interrupting a crucial step in the body’s production of estrogen. Certain breast cancer cells necessitate estrogen to enable them to grow. Thus, the growth of the breast cancer cells is suppressed by eliminating estrogen. The most common side effect associated with Anastrozole is bone weakness. Women who started using it after two years of using Tamoxifen had more frequent incidence of fractures compared to those who continued taking Tamoxifen. This drug may be used with statins which can strengthen the bone to avoid fractures and cardiovascular risks. Continue reading...

Fareston
Fareston (generic name toremifene) is used to slow down the growth of metastatic breast cancer which has spread from the original tumour. It works by blocking estrogen from reaching cancer cells. Some types of breast cancer require estrogen to grow. Unlike chemotherapy, fareston does not actually destroy cancer cells. Fareston is also preventing the development of prostate cancer. The recommended dosage of fareston is 60 mg once a day or as prescribed by doctor. Fareston was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in October 1995.

Femara
Femara (generic name letrozole) is a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor that has been used for the adjuvant treatment of hormonally-responsive breast cancer. It works by reducing the total amount of estrogen produced primarily in the body which helps to starve cancer cells by depriving them of estrogen. The related agent to femara is anastrazole. It has also been used to treat endometriosis. Femara pcos has been use off label for ovarian stimulation by fertility doctors. The recommended dosage of femara is 2.5 mg tablet a day or as prescribed by doctor. Generally it is taken with or without food. Brand-name Femara is manufactured by Novartis Pharmaceuticals. However, the medication is also available in generic form.

Megace
Megace (generic name megestrolum) is indicated to treat loss of appetite and weight loss that is a result from Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Megace is also indicated to treat advanced breast cancer and endometrial cancer. Megace may also be used for other purposes not mentioned here. Important key words: megace es, megace mg, megestrol drug.

Nolvadex
Tamoxifen Nolvadex (tamoxifen) is used in the treatment of some kind of breast cancer. Nolvadex is recommended for women who are at high risk for breast cancer and for women with DCIS, but after surgery and radiation. It blocks female hormone called estrogen there by preventing the growth of tumours that are activated by estrogen. Hormones that cause breast cancer growth may also be blocked by ovarian function suppression using drugs, surgery or radiation to the ovaries. It is not yet known if giving ovarian function suppression together with tamoxifen citrate or exemestane is more effective than giving tamoxifen citrate alone in treating breast cancer.

Nolvadex (tamoxifen citrate) is an estrogen receptor antagonist classified as a selective estrogen receptor modulator or SERMs. Its molecular formula is C26H29NO•C6H8O7 Nolvadex is a hormonal drug therapy used as treatment for Estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer, as well as prophylactic agents for those who are at high risk for having the disease. Nolvadex is the treatment of choice and first line treatment due to its efficacy and tolerability (Clemons, et al., 2002).

Background of disease which the drug treat

Tamoxifen – Saving Lives from Breast Cancer

One of the most dreaded diagnoses that one could hear from a health professional is that of cancer. Being diagnosed with cancer engages a lot of negative thoughts and emotions: fear, isolation, despair, and death. But these thoughts and emotions are unnecessary because most cancers are curable. The World Health Organization states that more than 30% of all cancer deaths could be prevented. Furthermore, most cancers have high cure rates. Early detection and adequate treatment are the keys in the fight against cancer.
