Campto notes
Irinotecan is the generic name given to the medicine which goes under the name of Campto and is also known as Camptosar. Campto is prescribed to patients whose bowel cancer has spread to other parts of their body. Since surgery alone does not suffice to treat cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, it is a general practice to treat the patient through chemotherapy that basically involves the administration of an anti-cancer drug like Campto that contains irinotecan hydrochloride as an active ingredient.
Campto can be prescribed in combination with other anti-cancer drugs to a patient when he/she is first diagnosed with symptoms indicating the spread of bowel cancer to other body parts. The drug can also be administered to patients whose cancer treatment might not have shown a positive response or whose cancer might have been revived after the initial treatment.
Campto should be given only be prescribed by doctors who have an experience in administering treatment to patients diagnosed with cancer. After taking the medicine, patients might have symptoms of nausea, and might even suffer from diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramping and infections. It is also possible that before being given the dosage of Campto, the patient might have to take one or more additional medicines in order to avoid vomiting or feeling of sickness after the treatment.
It is vital for the patients to undertake a blood test before every treatment. The doctor also needs to be informed beforehand, if the patient is allergic to irinotecan hydrochloride, or any other components of the drug. The doctor should also make sure that the patient neither pregnant nor is planning pregnancy in the near future. Breast –feeding mothers also need to inform the doctor about the same.
