However, on an average 25 to 50 mg of caffeine is enough for a human to increase his or her alertness and to reduce the fatigue.
Overdose
Caffeine if taken in large amounts for a longer period can lead to severe condition known as Caffeinism, which is a kind of addiction to caffeine with a range of mental and physical abnormalities such as irritation, nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, frequent headaches, respiratory problems, heart palpitations and hyperreflexia, better known as muscle twitching. Other than these, caffeine leads to increased formation of stomach acids therefore increased caffeine consumption can lead to peptic ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease and erosive esophagitis. If caffeine is consumed along with certain other drugs then it may increase toxicity, for example with paracetamol.
Caffeine consumed in excess, like if taken about 300 mg, is considered an acute overdose and can result in the over-stimulation of central nervous system, known as caffeine intoxication. However, an average dose depends a lot on the body type and size of a person.
