AMINOGUANIDINE

Description:

Aminoguanidine is an anti-aging drug which slows down the aging process by preventing the cross linking of proteins. This cross linking of proteins of, for example the skin, nerves, lens of the eyes and kidney, are thought to be the cause of the aging process which manifests as yellowy leathery skin, certain cancers, the thickening of the arteries and damaged immune system.

About the Drug

The same way an apple turns yellow when it is cut in half due to the cross linking of proteins, it is believed that in a similar way our body starts to age as the proteins in our body cross link. The changes in our bodies as we grow older and the health problems that occur at old age such as senile cataracts, cancers, diminished immune response and thickening of the arteries could be attributed to this cross linking. By preventing this cross linking Aminoguanidine slows down the process of aging and is also likely to prevent the visible signs of aging. Aminoguanidine has been shown to prevent the cardiac enlargement caused by aging and it also decreases the amount of cross linking caused by AGE (advanced glucation end products). AGE are produced from damaged DNA which are a product of a reaction between DNA and glucose, Experimental studies on human patients as well as on animals have shown aminoguanidine’s ability to inhibit the bad form of cholesterol from binding to the walls of blood vessels thereby preventing coagulation and clots. Furthermore studies on human have shown that aminoguanidine can increase flow in clogged blood vessel as 11 patients who had constricted blood vessels caused by arteriosclerosis showed significant improvement following treatment with aminoguanidine. Another interesting attribute of aminoguanidine is that it can help reduce the complications that are associated with diabetes. It does this by binding with sugars and in the process preventing the glucose DNA reactions leading to AGE; this has been shown in a number of clinical trials.

How to take

Aminoguanidine can be taken at normal dosage with food, the dose could be between 150mg and 300mg daily; as a single dose or split into three 75mg doses. A higher dosage may be given to diabetes; between 300mg and 600mg or higher. The half life of aminoguanidine as about 4 hour therefore for optimum absorption it is advisable to split dose and take at intervals rather than a single large dose.

Possible Side Effects

Human trials so far indicate nausea and headache as possible side effects. However more data is required in order to establish more of the possible side effects of this drug. It is recommended that you consult a medical expert while taking aminoguanidine.

Drug Interaction

Inform your doctor of any drugs you are taking before taking aminoguanidine. It may be required to take other drugs while taking aminoguanidine such as vitamin B supplements to counteract the low absorption of vitamin B caused by aminoguanidine. Acarbose and Metformin can be used in combination with aminoguanidine.

Anti-aging news:

Adolescents weight control strategies identified – Says researchers

In a study published in Journal of the American Dietetic Association researchers have claimed to find the weight control strategy for adolescents, which is a major public health problem that impacts one out of every three children resulting in 4-5 million overweight youth in the United States. The researchers said that from the statistics available it is clearly seen that weight control strategies for adolescents is necessary.

130 adolescents were taken into participation for this study, out of them 62 were successful in losing weight and 68 were not. The adolescents were interrogated and from the data achieved, the authors evaluated weight control strategies, sedentary behaviors, dietary intake, physical activity, weighing frequency and current weight status. The participants were distributed in four different groups, the first was Healthy Weight Control Behaviors group which includes less calories food, more exercise, eating less high fat and junk food, drinking less soda, drinking more water and eating more fruits. The second category was Unhealthy Weight Control Behaviors which includes laxatives, vomiting, diuretics, smoking and fasting, the third category was Extreme Dietary Changes included use of liquid diet supplements, the Atkins diet, a structured diet, fasting and increased protein consumption and the fourth category Structured Behaviors included eating certain amount of calories, counting calories, recording food intake and working with a professional

The successful adolescents were reported from the first group. A higher percentage of adolescents who lost weight reported using 6 or more Healthy Weight Control Behaviors compared to those who did not lose weight. Less number of adolescents who lost weight reported using any of the Structured Behavior strategies assessed. Kerri Boutelle, PhD and co-author of this study stated that these findings provide a glimpse of optimism that adolescents can lose a significant amount of weight and maintain this weight loss and that there are no magical solutions but by eating more fruits and vegetables, eating less fat and decreasing sedentary time can help considerably to achieve the goal.
