Amaryl description

Amaryl belongs to a class of drugs known as sulfonylurea; drugs used in the management of diabetes. Amaryl is a medium to long acting anti-diabetic drug that can be taken orally to lower blood sugar in type II (non insulin dependent) diabetic patients. Other drugs in this class include Glucotrol, Micronase, Tollinase and Orinase.

About the Drug

The blood sugar level is controlled by the release of insulin in the beta cells of the pancreas. In diabetic patients the metabolism or utilization of insulin is compromised. Amaryl, the penultimate third generation sulfonylurea is an oral drug that can be taken for the treatment of Diabetes. In type II diabetic patients, there is insufficient insulin production by the beta cells and the little insulin being produced by these cells are not being utilized by the cells of the body. Amaryl stimulates the beta cells in the pancreas to increase insulin production and also boosts the rate at which sugar is taken up by the cells of the muscles and fat tissues. In addition to this Amaryl decreases the amount of sugar produced by the liver. Hence this drug can be used to control blood sugar levels in type II diabetic patients by allowing the body to utilize endogenous insulin.

How to take

Since Amaryl is a medium to long acting drug, the usual dose is a once daily tablet taken during or just before the first meal for the day. For type II diabetic patients exercise and controlled diet is initially recommended to help control blood sugar. That failing, drugs such as Amaryl can then be used to control the level of sugar in the blood. Amaryl can be used alone or in combination with other anti diabetic drugs depending on the doctor’s recommendation. The drug should be used with special care in elderly individuals, people with Kidney or liver malfunction, people who have problems with steroid and adrenaline production, people with G6PD deficiency. Notify your doctor of any illness you suffer before taking Amaryl. Furthermore you should monitor your urine/blood sugar levels and body changes especially at the initial stage of taking this drug, should you notice any illnesses your doctor should be informed. Consume alcohol in moderation and with food while taking Amaryl.

Overdose

Taking an overdose of Amaryl will lead to mild or sever hypoglycaemia depending on how much is taken. Mild hypoglycaemia can be remedied by taking sugary foods or sugar tablets however in the event of sever hypoglycaemia the patient should seek medical attention.

Contraindications

Individuals with cardiovascular problems are advised against taking Amaryl unless recommended by the doctor after considering the specific case.

Possible Side Effects

The following are some of the side effects associated with Amaryl which anyone taking the drug MAY have: Cholestatic jaundice, weight gain, liver malfunction, allergy to active ingredient in the drug, hepatitis, allergic skin reaction, hypoglycaemia, diarrhoea, constipation vomiting, abdominal pain or any disturbance of the gut, temporary visual problems (usually at the start of the treatment).

Amaryl notes:

Amaryl drug is an oral medication prescribed for lowering blood sugar level in diabetic patients. Like other drugs, Amaryl is also prescribed along with other insulin-boosting drugs such as Glucophage.
