Amantadine is an antiviral drug used for the symptomatic and prophylactic treatment of influenza A and Parkinson’s disease which is also known as shaking palsy and paralysis agitans. It is also used for the treatment of extrapyramidal reactions, postherpetic neuralgia, stiffness and shaking due to certain medications used to treat mental, nervous, and emotional conditions. Amantidine may be taken by itself or in together with other drugs for Parkinson’s disease. This drug allows more normal bodily movements as the symptoms of the disease declines by improving muscular control. It is sold under the name Vyregit and Symmetrel. Side effects may include insomnia, nervousness, agitation, and anxiety. Amantandine is used in the treatment of Influenza A and Parkinson’s disease. It is a synthetic antiviral drug which can also be used for treating extrapyramidal reactions, post-herpetic neuralgia, shaking and stiffness that occur from other medications used for mental emotional and nervous conditions. This drug promotes more controlled body movement through restoring control of muscles. Because a virus cannot replicate outside a living body, its replication is dependent on its ability to invade and take over other living cells. Amantadine acts by preventing the virus from taking over the host cell by preventing it from releasing its nucleic acid into the potential host cell. Amantadine promotes normal body movements by improving control over muscles and reduces stiffness of the muscles.
