Allegra description
Allegra (also known as fexofenadine) is an antihistamine. It is used in the treatment of various types of allergies such as hay fever, seasonal allergic rhinitis as well as chronic idiopathic urticaria. Antihistamines prevent the action of histamine in the eye and nasal area, Allegra is only used to ease the discomfort of these allergies however cannot be a cure for the allergy. This drug results in less drowsiness than is seen in histamine receptor inhibitors since it does not breach the blood to brain barrier.
About the drug
As large amounts of micron sized pollen grains are released into the air in the spring and fall seasons, many people develop an allergy to these pollen grains as their body begins to react to these substances by initiating an immune response as it mistakes these substances as pathogens. This response/ sensitivity cause itching, sneezing and other discomfort with symptoms reappearing and in some case becoming worse every season. These symptoms are due to the histamine being released during this immune response.
Although the precise mechanism by which allergies occur is unknown, it is thought to be as a result of immune response initiated when pollens which are released seasonally into the atmosphere, get into the body. The body recognises these substances as foreign and treats them as harmful hence automatically initiates an immune response to protect the body. During this immune response, histamine is released. The histamine causes many of the discomfort associated with allergies such as discomfort in the eye and nose. Allergies may worsen by the season due to the body’s intent to improve on its immune response to the pollens that are perceived as harmful.
How to Take
Allegra is available as oral dosage forms; 120mg and 180mg tablets in blister packs of 10 and 30 tablets. It can be used by children from the age of 6 years as well as by adults. For children between 6 to 11 years of age a 30mg daily dose is usually recommended for treatment of allergic reactions and for children from 12 years and adults a 60mg twice daily dose is recommended. For seasonal allergies a 120 mg or 180mg once daily dose is recommended and a 180mg daily dose is also recommended for urticaria.
Overdose
Although there is no clinical study on Allegra overdose, drugs taken in excess pose an adverse effect on the body. In the event of an overdose seek medical attention where any unabsorbed drug should then be removed using appropriate methods.

There are very few side effects associated with using Allegra as most individuals are usually tolerant of the drug. Most common albeit rare ones are headache fatigue, dizziness, drowsiness and nausea.
